The 2024 Physica Prize was awarded to UvA-IoP and QuSoft researcher Florian Schreck. Schreck receives the prize for his work on Bose Einstein condensates and their applications, such as building a coherent and continuous atom laser. The prize will be awarded during the annual FYSICA conference in Eindhoven on 12 April.Ultracold atomsFlorian Schreck is one of the leaders in the field of ultracold atoms and quantum gases. His field has become one of the most active in physics, promising breakthroughs in quantum sensing, quantum simulation, quantum computation, as well as the most accurate clocks in the world. Through an intricate combination of laser cooling and trapping, ultrahigh vacuum, and advanced optical imaging techniques, atoms can be cooled to temperatures close to absolute zero. This opens a window onto the fundaments of physics that can also be harnessed to build extremely sensitive measurement devices.Among Schreck’s achievements are the construction of the world’s first Bose-Einstein condensate of strontium atoms, observing so-called Feshbach resonances in the interaction between rubidium and strontium atoms, opening up a novel route to the creation of ultracold molecules with both an electric and magnetic dipole moment, and achieving continuous Bose-Einstein condensation, a long-sought and elusive goal of the scientific community, and an important step towards the realization of a continuous atom laser.From the lab to the real worldOne of Schreck’s goals is to bring ultracold atoms from fundamental research to real-world applications. To that end he leads multiple large EU-funded projects. He helped kickstart portable atomic clock development, and he aims to build the first national ultracold quantum clock, offering precision timing for example to telecom companies or timestamping financial transactions. Through the Quantum Delta NL consortium, his group brings ultracold quantum sensing technology closer to the market.Among many other signs of excellence and impact, the wide appeal of Schreck’s work was illustrated by the choice of King Willem-Alexander and the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, to visit his laboratories together, during the official state visit last spring.Physica PrizeThe Physica prize is awarded annually by the Physica foundation to an excellent physicist who has contributed to physics in The Netherlands. 2024 Physica Prize awarded to Amsterdam Researcher Florian Schreck

On 28 and 29 November, in collaboration with the Amsterdam Business School (ABS), we will host a unique masterclass to acquaint decision makers with the world of quantum technology. Masterclass Introduction to Quantum Computing

His Majesty the King Willem-Alexander and President Emmanuel Macron will pay an official visit to the Quantum Gases &amp; Quantum Information Lab at the University of Amsterdam today. This visit focuses on the Dutch-French collaboration in this and other fields, at the time that it highlights the importance of developing an open European strategic autonomy in quantum, to make the EU less dependent and more secure.As an opportunity to showcase the facilities where pioneering research in the field of matter waves is conducted, Prof. Florian Schreck and Prof. Philippe Bouyer will lead the tour and explain to the King and President Macron how this project can improve future quantum sensors. The lab, one of Quantum Delta NL’s testbeds for the Quantum Sensing catalyst programme, is also involved in the Quantum Computing catalyst programme, in collaboration with Eindhoven University of Technology.Furthermore, the ambition is for the lab to become one of the hubs of a European shared metrology network that uses quantum sensors for various applications related to climate change, such as floods, dikes, and changes in the oceans. The visit of the King and President Macron responds to the agenda that covers the trilateral cooperation between the Netherlands, France and Germany, under the recently signed MoU.Following the lab tour, the King and President Macron will attend a round table discussion on European technological sovereignty with CEOs, scientists, and investors, a topic that grasps on the importance of strengthening the European deep tech ecosystem in the context of the EU Chips Act and Quantum technology. This discussion will underline the significance of quantum technology for Europe’s open strategic autonomy.The visit to UvA is part of the two-day state visit of President Macron to the Netherlands that reaffirms the excellent relationship between both countries and aims to deepen cooperation, particularly in the areas of innovation, sustainability, and security towards a stronger, greener and safer Europe.

November 8th,  the EQSI–European Quantum Software Institute was launched with a stakeholder event in Paris.One of the founding members is the director of QuSoft , Harry Buhrman according to whom “this is an important step towards a strong European ecosystem in quantum software” and our continuous commitment to scientific excellence and responsible innovation at the European level. European Quantum Software Institute launched in Paris

The European Commission has just launched the “European infrastructure for Rydberg Quantum Computing (EuRyQa)” project aimed at establishing Rydberg quantum processors as a leading platform for scalable quantum computing in Europe.Assembling eleven partners from seven countries, EuRyQa is funded under the highly competitive Horizon Europe programme (HORIZON-CL4-2021-DIGITAL-EMERGING-01-30) with a total budget of almost 5 million € over the next three years. Ultracold trapped atoms have recently emerged as one of the most promising physical platforms for digital quantum computing, having already demonstrated systems with more than 200 qubits (the computational unit of a quantum computer) with strong interactions mediated by their highly excited Rydberg states and a clear path to further scalability to thousands of qubits. To develop the next generation of fully programmable and scalable quantum computing systems based on ultracold Rydberg atoms, EuRyQa will bring together four complementary European Rydberg platforms. In this way, the consortium aims to provide a unique European solution for Rydberg-based quantum computing, together with the first pan-European benchmarking and standardisation of the technology.

We will provide a common quantum computing stack for Rydberg atoms, a federated cloud service, solutions to concrete computational problems, and key technology for fault-tolerant quantum computing with Rydberg qubits. The success of EuRyQa will be a game changer for Europe in a global competition for quantum computing.

To achieve the project’s aims, EuRyQa unites partners from academia at the forefront of ultracold atom-based quantum technology with industrial partners providing complementary expertise on quantum hardware, classical electronics, firmware, and software. EuRyQa is coordinated by the University of Strasbourg (France) and other partners include the SMEs PASQAL (France) and QM Technologies (Israel), the University of Stuttgart, the spin-off Qruise GmbH from the Research Centre Jülich, and the consultancy EURICE GmbH (Germany), the University of Amsterdam and the Technical University of Eindhoven (the Netherlands), the research institute Idryma Technologias Kai Erevnas (Greece), Associacao Portuguese Quantum Institute (Portugal), and Università degli Studi di Padova (Italy).

Launch of EuRyQa Project

Last week the Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the six partners of the Quantum Application Lab (QAL): University of Amsterdam (UvA), the Netherlands Organization for applied scientific research (TNO), the national research institute for mathematics and computer science (CWI), the Dutch collaborative ICT Organization for Dutch higher education and research (SURF), TU Delft (on behalf of QuTech and Quantum Inspire) and the Netherlands eScience Center.The Quantum Application Lab QAL will fulfill the much-needed connection between scientific developments of quantum hardware and software and demand-driven solutions for e.g. optimization, simulation, and machine learning. Embedded in the Quantum Delta NL (QDNL) ecosystem, QAL will accelerate the construction of a social and economic innovation infrastructure for quantum computing and the knowledge, capabilities, and competencies required for this. QAL will do this by identifying promising domains for quantum computing applications and executing projects together with scientific, industrial, and/or private sector partners.The QAL partners are developing a public-private partnership (PPP) that will bridge the gap between academic research and industrial applications of quantum computing to solve some of our most pressing societal challenges in the area of health care, energy, technology and security. They will set up collaborative projects to explore and develop quantum applications with added value for other research and industrial partners.Rapid transformationQuantum computing is rapidly transforming from a specialist theory in physics to a source of new technologies, economic growth, and workforce development opportunities. While still a nascent technology, its potential is actively being explored across many sectors. The fields of chemistry, automotive, logistics, biotech, finance, the energy and power industry, and a host of other sectors stand to benefit from quantum’s computing and simulation capabilities. And more generally, quantum computing is also expected to be used in a variety of applications for the rapid training of machine learning models and to create optimized algorithms.As a national, open innovation and trans-disciplinary collaboration between public and private organizations, QAL is providing for all necessary conditions and infrastructure that lead to robust quantum computing application development. We cover the whole chain from problem identification and dissection into different (mathematical) parts, to implementation of existing classical solutions and development of novel quantum algorithms, benchmarking and optimization based on multiple quantum computing architectures, and intimate knowledge of the needs of potential users.

Organizations sign MoU for Quantum Application Lab

On July 14, the new quantum innovation hub Quantum Delta Amsterdam, established by the University of Amsterdam (UvA), Centrum Wiskunde &amp; Informatica (CWI) and research center QuSoft, and Quantum Delta NL raised the flag together to celebrate their close collaboration for the coming seven years. Together with research institutes, companies and the municipality, the plan is to boost quantum research and development in the Amsterdam ecosystem.Quantum Delta Amsterdam is one of the five innovation hubs of Quantum Delta NL. It acts as liaison to the national quantum activities as described in the National Agenda for Quantum Technology and beyond. The mission of Quantum Delta Amsterdam is to connect academia, industry and society in a quantum ecosystem in the Amsterdam region by facilitating knowledge exchanges and innovation. Christian Schaffner, Chair of Quantum Delta Amsterdam: “I will ensure that based on our local strengths here in Amsterdam, we contribute to these national quantum goals. I look forward to a good collaboration with Quantum Delta NL in the coming 7 years, and hopefully also in the time after that”.“The collaboration with Amsterdam started as early as 2014, when Harry Buhrman (director QuSoft) explained their work on algorithms for the first time”, added Freeke Heijman, director Quantum Delta NL. “In the years that followed, a lot of progress was made and hurdles were taken, leading to the National Agenda Quantum Technology and our solid QDNL team. The time was needed to get to this point, in which all hubs have their unique place but also form one Quantum Delta NL ecosystem, in which we work together. This made raising the flag together extra special”.Knowledge exchangeWith this collaboration, quantum technology from the academic world is becoming more tangible, understandable and more useful for society, both for the business community and for the general public. As a network organisation, Quantum Delta Amsterdam has a strong backbone of knowledge partners such as the University of Amsterdam, Centrum Wiskunde &amp; Informatica (CWI), Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU), and the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences. Its research base includes QuSoft, the research center for quantum software, and the UvA Quantum Labs, which focus on hardware for quantum simulation, atomic clocks and quantum sensing applications. With the support of the National Growth Fund to Quantum Delta NL, the plan is to build a new quantum building at Amsterdam Science Park, that houses the Quantum Delta Amsterdam hub, where the hub’s partners and companies can meet and exchange knowledge.Starting point“In essence, Amsterdam has a very good starting position when it comes to quantum technology” says Ton de Kok, director CWI and member of the Supervisory Board of Quantum Delta Amsterdam. “At CWI, it started over 25 years ago with our pioneering quantum and information theory research. Now a collaboration of multiple knowledge partners has turned into the new Quantum Delta Amsterdam hub”. Together with Quantum Delta NL, Quantum Delta Amsterdam provides access to powerful research facilities, infrastructure, and tooling. And with the soon to be established Quantum Applications Lab, in which CWI, UvA and TNO are taking the lead, a clear link with the business field is made”.Future workforceIt will take several years to create a suitable workforce with the right knowledge to deal with this new technology. Therefore, quantum technology is also increasingly emerging in education. New education programs are being set up in Amsterdam, such as the professional Quantum Technology Master’s at the AUAS and the QuSoft Master at the UvA, for which the first certificates will soon be awarded. In addition, Quantum Delta Amsterdam organises workshops to prepare a broad audience for the opportunities and threats that quantum technology brings to businesses and organisations.

CWI and the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences jointly establish a new special lectorate in Applied Quantum Computing. The lectorate supports the quantum software institute QuSoft in bridging the gap fundamental quantum research and quantum applications.The new lectorate facilitates QuSoft in exploring which quantum computing applications are feasible in the future. It will study how quantum algorithms and protocols developed within QuSoft can be further turned into applications. Furthermore, knowledge gained within the lectorate will also be used for educational resources.Fraud detection and drug discoveryIn order to translate theory into application, the group will work with industry cases. QuSoft has already joined forces with partners such as ABN AMRO and Bosch, exploring how quantum computing could enhance industrial processes. One example of such research is using quantum approaches to enhance fraud detection at banks, combining techniques from artificial intelligence with quantum computing algorithms. Another example of an industrial case would be the discovery of new drugs, accelerated by new quantum simulation algorithms. For quantum Connecting knowledge to society<a target="_blank" href="https://www.qusoft.org/">QuSoft</a> is a collaboration between CWI and the University of Amsterdam, and serves as the Dutch research centre for quantum software. “This collaboration supports CWI and QuSoft in further connecting our academic knowledge with real-life applications and practice-based education”, says <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cwi.nl/people/victor-land">Victor Land</a>, Institute Coordinator at QuSoft. “Simultaneously, it helps us to enlarge and strengthen our industrial networks, creating even more opportunities to connect our knowledge to society.”Major Global DevelopmentThe <a target="_blank" href="https://www.amsterdamuas.com/">Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences</a> (AUAS) has appointed Marten Teitsma as special lecturer for Applied Quantum Computing, starting on 1 September 2020. After earning a PhD in artificial intelligence, Teitsma expanded his activities towards education development. At the AUAS he has initiated various activities in the field of quantum computing. Teitsma: “With this special lectorate, Dutch higher professional education will be connected to a major global development. The consequences of quantum technology are not yet foreseeable, but will potentially affect our lives in many ways.”The AUAS is the first university of applied sciences in the Netherlands to establish a lectorate focused on quantum computing. The lectorate is co-funded by <a target="_blank" href="http://www.regieorgaan-sia.nl/en">Regieorgaan SIA</a>, the Dutch Taskforce for Applied Research.

New lectorate Applied Quantum Computing

Quantum technology is an important key technology offering great opportunities for the Netherlands in the coming years. To accelerate the leading role of the Netherlands in quantum technology, a new institution was established: Quantum Delta Nederland (QDNL) Foundation. By expanding the current ecosystem of companies, knowledge institutes and governmental institutions QDNL will continue to build a strong ‘Quantum Delta’.Quantum Delta NL was set up by a broad collaboration of knowledge institutes, companies and social organizations, including QuSoft (University of Amsterdam and CWI), TU Delft,, Leiden University, TU/e, University of Twente, TNO, TechLeap, Braventure, NanolabNL, MinacNed and NanoNextNL.
